Day 2 – Goodyear

When we arrived at my parents’ place, my grandfather, my dad’s two brothers and my aunt were waiting for us. Boom! Family. When all I wanted to do was sleep.

Fortunately, Greg can talk “car” and they spent an hour discussing the trailer wheels and whether the bearings were correctly packed. Then I slept like I hadn’t slept in ages. The only thing we have to do – the only thing left on our agenda – is to get to Key West.

My parents took us on a hike near Goodyear and then to a Thai restaurant they like. We talked about food and family, and where we wanted to travel. Then we ran errands to Home Depot, Harbor Freight and Autozone in search of “bearing buddies” to solve the trailer issue and a new air/fuel meter for a separate issue we’ve been having with the truck.

During the three years we’ve been friends I often remember thinking that it was too bad that Greg and I didn’t fall in love – because he would fit in with my family so perfectly. In the car on the way home my mother quoted me as saying this. “Do you remember my response?” She was in the front seat and couldn’t see me shaking my head. “I know you don’t listen to your mother, so I’m sure you don’t remember, but I said that it was better to like someone first and be friends rather than to have a relationship that was founded on passion. Because that never lasts.” I squeezed Greg’s hand.

Once back at the ranch Greg and I rearranged the truck and trailer to redistribute the weight (all three Ruth brothers agreed there was too much weight on the tongue). For dinner my mom and I made pork soft tacos with leftover sweet potato fries, then we sat talking in the hot tub under the stars. It’s been about nine months since our friendship changed into something more, and still, almost every day, I feel like we change into something new together.

  1. This is the sweetest frickin’ thing I will read all day. I love knowing you found someone who is both as flexible and steadfast as you are. xo

    1. Aw. Yeah, I know I was pushing the boundary there on the cheese factor, but I needed to get a little of it into the story. And it is pretty great. We’re having a lot of fun. Wait until you see what we’re doing tonight!
