If you find yourself on a three-day retreat to Traverse City, this is one thing you should eat. I have had grilled romaine before and I once grilled bok choy at a dinner party in L.A., but for some reason I never thought to turn it into breakfast fare. It never occurred to me to put a poached egg on top. The idea did occur to the chefs at The Towne Plaza – and on this brisk morning in September their discovery gave me something to smile about.
They took an otherwise heavy plate of Eggs Benedict, lightened it up and gave it some panache. The romaine was doused in lemon juice and olive oil to keep it from sticking, and then lightly grilled. They placed the poached egg and Hollandaise on top, with a handful of fried pancetta and a side of potatoes.
I wish we could have stayed here all day sampling their charcuterie and eating pork (the restaurant’s logo is a diagram of pork cuts), but we had places to go and things to see. Next up on our list was a visit to Wilson Antique, a four-story structure a few blocks away that is chock-o-block full of cool finds, like old boating accessories, 1950s cocktail shakers and glasses, vintage clothing and furniture. In spite of the volume, the entire place is well-curated, making it a fun place to spend a few hours walking back in time.
