All in the Family

Before dinner we made a quick stop in the old town at a place we’d seen on our first day – Sjöbarren, where the keg comes out of the helmet from an old diver’s suit. It was filled with locals enjoying a meal out. We drank champagne and longed for oysters.

Then we headed to Familjen, a Swedish brasserie. Though the streets of the city seemed dead on this Tuesday night, inside Familjen (which means “The Family”), it was hip and bustling. Our meal there was delicious and the staff attentive. They have two seasonally rotating tasting menus, one for an affordable 335 SEK, and a bit more lyxig (luxury) meal for 100 kronor more.

We ate an appetizer of white asparagus served with bleak roe, crème fraiche, deep-fried sourdough and anchovy butter. I ordered the steak, an oven-baked sirloin at 127 degrees served with oxtail, tongue and smoked marrow. (You know I had to order it once I saw that there was marrow involved.) Amy ordered the pike-perch which was the more interesting choice because it was served on a vinaigrette made of ramps, nettles and spring onions. That is something I plan to replicate.

If you are traveling through Gothenburg, Familjen is a cozy place to spend an evening. The tasting menus will get you an excellent meal for your money and their wine list was one of the more interesting ones we saw on our travels.
